I also have "When the Leaf Blew In" on my own Grade 2 shelf and happen to be doing some verbs work this week in Lesson 8 of Journeys, so....I tweaked it into a bit of an interactive notebook page.
I hope I do Cara's idea justice and I am thrilled to fit some seasonal literature into the Journeys program. Due to Hurricane Sandy, we had our regular one hour last day with the students, BUT we have to come back on Monday and Tuesday to make up for teacher days lost. I had a productive last school day once the Sunshine brunch was done, and I left a to do list on my desk for the last two days we have to be there. The district is using some of each day for training with the new Journeys reading program to start in the fall and we also have about 3 hours of time for ourselves each day.

I started off fully gung-ho for Daily 5, but found that I didn't follow through with the mini-lessons long enough. The stamina really stuck for the kids and I am sending them to third grade with an enjoyment for sitting and reading, so I am really happy for that. Mini-lessons have never been my strong point since I can't do anything for just a few minutes. Something to continue to work on... I also have to focus on the new Journeys program and see how the two can work together.

My decorative game plan stayed strong with the zebra last year, but I've tweaked it with a lot of visual cues from Pinterest during the year. I loved the coordinated classrooms that I have seen there. I took the zebra backed board from last year and ran with the black and white with pops of red for next year. Hoping to post photos.

Keep checking back. I promise to try to do better with posting :-)Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-54910887479975948712012-09-25T11:20:00.000-04:002013-06-23T11:09:59.320-04:00Daily 5!
Very happy with the mini lessons done so far. We are up to 15 minutes of stamina (2nd grade 21 kids). Had to share a link to this site with some great handouts/printables!
Uh-Oh! This Adventure theme is taking a very WILD turn! Some errands today turned into a zebra themed shopping bonanza. Check out some of the great finds.

The cube storage/seating (from TJ Maxx) is for by my chart stand and carpet for whole class lessons.

The pink zebra bag (for carrying stuff), pink zebra frames (for beautifully posting required signs by the door), and sheet of zebra duct tape (for creating two starting marks for line up) are from Staples.

The zebra trim and multicolored zebra cardstock are from Michael's.

All these match my clip chart and binders I have made over the summer. Who knew I liked zebra so much? I was going to have different adventures in different areas of the classroom....hmmmm, now what to do about my Fairy Tale Adventure Word Wall? It may need a redo mid-year. For the time being, I'll leave it be.Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-83036442298233610282012-07-29T11:15:00.000-04:002012-07-29T11:15:13.566-04:00Working On My ChecklistI have been working hard on my summer checklist. As you'll see, I've added a bunch of other side projects - as always!

First, I have read both books by "the Sisters" - The Daily 5 and CAFE. I have been following all those fellow bloggers with their book discussions. Reading the books and blogs really set off many of the side projects. I have also been working on that CAFE & Daily 5 board. I have all the pieces made. Now I just have to put it all together.

After reading the Sisters, I was inspired by Ladybug's Teacher Files wonderful organization and thought "Why, yes, I would like to start the year organized." So I made my own binder cover, spine label, and dividers in a WILD pattern to match my stylish adventure theme.

My binders also tie in with the Adventure Clip Chart that I made for this new year. The Clip Chart promotes positive behavior choices and also considers those kids who already make good choices. Everyone starts at the green level and can move up or down through the entire day. The link takes you to my Clip Chart at TeachersPayTeachers where I have shared it as a freebie with an explanation note.

Then, These are my Whole Class Journals that are available for the kids to use during the "Work On Writing" section of our Daily 5. I had started creating my own, but found these from Teach-A-Roo and loved them. Inside the cover there are also word banks for vocabulary for each topic. I loved that addition! We all know how often kids come up to ask for spelling help! I may make more topics later, but these are great for starting the year. Who can resist all those brand new composition books at 50 cents each??

Don't worry friends! I am not done yet! I am still working on the Whole Brain thing and also making a display with the Beanie Baby Reading strategies. Luckily there is still time!

I am reading the Daily 5 book and scouring the vast WWW to find anything Daily 5 and CAFE. I managed to stumble and land face first in this Wonderful group of bloggers working their way through the Daily 5 book. I am so happy to read the words of these bloggers and find that it echoes my own thoughts starting the book. I hope I can catch up to them! Here is the link to Lory's Page when she began this book talk. At the bottom are a number of other bloggers, each contributing their thoughts. All of these sites have great ideas of their own.

I am still building that black, white, and red all over bulletin board. I plan to stop by school tomorrow to do some measuring of the board in question so that I can move forward with the whole display and not find out I made it too big when I get there in August. Here is what I have so far...Still a work in progress.

I am reading one of the links at Fourcornerslife blog and she has some interesting points about the importance of choice and building stamina. Returning to 2nd grade, I am excited about the improved maturity (potential?) of slightly older students. I am hoping to build on their desire to be "big kids" and that intrinsic motivation. I am also really crossing my fingers to build that stamina. I find it hard to button my own lip and let them work without praising the ones who are doing well, so I hope to build my own stamina, too.
Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-88320255410500551322012-07-05T14:27:00.000-04:002012-07-05T19:35:01.372-04:00CAFE and Daily 5 What's black, white, and red all over?My newest bulletin board!

Following the uber-responsible example of Mrs. B, I am trying to organize my summer home time. I am so proud of myself today - I went to the gym and spent two hours working on my teaching goals. Yay me! I downloaded The Daily 5 book to my iPad and I am reading, highlighting, searching online, printing notes, and working on a plan for the bulletin board I will use for the Daily 5 and CAFE. I have an adventure theme for my second graders in September and I got a bit carried away on the last day of school and put up a WILD zebra print wrapping paper as backing for this particular board. Now, looking at the layout of my classroom I realize that board will be a huge focus up on the front wall and the perfect place for my ambitious Daily 5 and CAFE displays. I have to get some measurements on the exact size of the board so I can continue to create the pieces I want to make for the display. In the next couple of days, I'll keep reading The Daily 5 and making a "sketch" of the bulletin board I want to have. My main focus is to keep the fun zebra background in a way that doesn't make any of my students queasy come September. Check back soon to see how I am doing.

.......A few hours later I'm baaaaaack. I just wanted to add that Mrs. Durning's site at Second Grade Is Splendid has a great series of posts for the Daily 5 as it is in her classroom. I find myself going back to her again and again. Thanks Mrs. Durning!Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-38898766599593670702012-06-26T18:11:00.001-04:002012-06-28T18:06:46.641-04:00Always Planning!School ended just last Friday, so here I am (like so many of us!) cruisin' the internet, setting up a game plan for next year.

I have packed (to move back to the grade I was in last year - argh!) and moved all my own stuff with minimal help from the custodians. I say I move it myself so that I know where it is in August, but in reality, I end up throwing last day items in the cubbies and wishing I could fast-forward to August when I will sit in a hot (but QUIET classroom) and organize all over again. At least I saved the custodians some work.

My theme next year will once again be Adventures in Second Grade! I have a Fairy Tale adventures word wall, a Jungle adventure board, a Safari adventure helper board, and a Pirate adventure board. I was able to carefully tack together and move my entire word wall to the new room and I will update my words for second grade. Yay! I also was able to get up some zebra wrapping paper for my Jungle board - now I just have to figure out what I want to go there....

That brings me to my learning list for the summer.

~ Whole Brain Learning - Last year I did some basics (Class-Yes, Teach-Ok). In September, I'd like to do
more.

~ Daily 5

~ CAFE - Both of these I admired first for the beautiful displays I saw on Pinterest (here is the link to my section School Ideas I Love ) and then for the great opportunity to create a more independent, self-directed second graders.

Do you think that is enough? What are you working on for the summer?

Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-4256140325851187702012-06-01T18:09:00.002-04:002012-06-01T18:09:30.929-04:00Dare to Dream! This is such a crazy time of year - and I love it! There are so many projects, culminating events, and (arg!) paperwork to do that I feel like there isn't enough time! Then I start seeing lists of children for my incoming class and I start thinking what fun things we can do next year. With new classroom assignments, I start cleaning, and purging, and planning my blank slate of a classroom. So many other teachers hate to move their classroom. Of course, who does want to start all over every year or two? But, as a pile-maker and never-got-filed lover, I have to appreciate the cleaning that I am forced to do, even if only to pack up my stuff. I am so drained at the end of these June days, but also have an underlying excitement of starting fresh! I can't wait!Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-2641705851174988372012-05-17T18:45:00.002-04:002012-05-17T19:09:19.794-04:00Switch-A-RooIn my own elementary years, you knew who the teachers were in each grade. You could be in Kindergarten and say, "I can't wait to get Mrs. X in third grade." You knew that teacher would be there when you got to that grade.

In my current school, that is not the case. Every year there are a number of changes at every grade level. Teachers are sometimes moved if they've been in one place too long - no matter if you have become a pro at the grade. Teachers are broken up from friends if they are too tight - no matter if you work as a great team at the grade. Teachers are left even if they request a change - no matter if they have good reason for needing a change. Teachers are moved while on maternity leave with no ability to come pack their own rooms.

I am happy with my expected move to 2nd grade. I was only in 2nd for two years before being bumped back to 1st grade. I was loving all I could do with those older guys and at two years in the grade, I was finding a nice groove.

So I look forward to a fresh new year, despite having to pack and move my room again. UGH! Well, at least it makes me clean house!

What happens at your school? Do teachers stay put? Do teachers get moved around? I'd love to hear from you.

I'll have to change the name of my site, too!
Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-81652757210187061382012-04-21T12:58:00.001-04:002012-06-28T18:06:46.643-04:00Using My Whole Brain? This school year, the wonderful Mrs. D brought up the topic of Whole Brain Teaching. She mentioned some quick ideas to use every day and I started using those in my day. Of course, I let it slide after a while since I never truly embraced it all the way.

Skip forward to end of April. I am cruising around those wonderful first grade blogs out there and I come across other mentions of Whole Brain Teaching at 3rd Grade Thoughts with some great teacher-made posters at The Kinder Polka Dot Patch. So here I am on a beautiful Saturday, doing what all teachers do. I am watching those videos on YouTube and thinking, should I start this now? Or wait until a fresh new year?

Tell me, what do you do with new ideas? Do you jump in right away, following your whims? Do you finish out the current group and start fresh in the new year?

This week our math topic focused on non-standard measurement. In our second day of exploration of this, one of the boys wanted to add me to his list of interesting items he measured. I allowed it, but refused to stand still while he did it. Instead, I marked the top of my head with a dry erase marker on the window of my classroom door. Word quickly spread around the group and the need to work together to rally their 20-ish cubes per kid was quickly realized. Great teamwork!Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-49396367241438300972012-03-15T20:11:00.000-04:002012-03-15T20:11:47.779-04:00St. Patrick's WeekI have loved this week of St. Patrick's Day themed activities...Daily fun limericks, fun center activities, magical creatures, wishes, and green - lots and lots of my favorite color GREEN! I found some great themed activity packs at Teachers Pay Teachers and I have loved pulling the week together with a common theme. I really have to find a way to do more themes. They are fun for the kids and me!
On one hand this was a crazy day, on the other hand, it was nice to just use one day of crazy! We did a variety of activities for both celebrations, but I still didn't get to everything I wanted to do! (To be honest, I usually don't get everything done, ever.) So, of course, there was still more to do today. I also had a half day out of the classroom due to training, so I sugared them up with the ol' Sweethearts valentine graphing, letting them eat the candies after. Then I left my sub friend to fend for herself for the rest of the day. Hey, it was me or her. One of us had to be there! Maybe they crashed later....? I hope so, for her sake :-)
As an additional piece of excitement today, the Parents As Reading Partners program was encouraging "Dress as an old person" day. One girl came in telling me her Grandma was very fashionable to explain her "cool Grandma" outfit. Another sweetie came in saying she wanted to bring her stuffed cat "because a lot of old ladies have cats". Ahhh, children...Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8338553395113294910.post-53894249025787561982012-02-16T19:47:00.000-05:002012-02-16T19:47:23.186-05:00I am frustrated with the presentation of the one website provider that my school district allows. I admit it - I want to be cuter! So here I am, concentrating very hard on this new ambition, creating a blog site. Around me run my four children under the age of 9. Already I have let them up too late (shhhh - it's only 7:43, but I know it will be another hour before they really are settled in bed). Hopefully I can get some more designing done in this next week as I will be home for winter break. Break for who? Always more to do. I hope you enjoy my efforts. Try not to laugh too hard as I find myself.Kathy Reganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03183582238670585829noreply@blogger.com0
